Definition
Vermiculite is a lightweight, absorbent mineral, mined and heat-expanded into a fluffy, flake-like form, widely used in mushroom cultivation for moisture retention and aeration. It is a common component of bulk substrate mixes, casing layers, and the classic brown-rice-flour cake used in PF Tek.
How Vermiculite Is Used
In bulk substrate preparation, vermiculite is typically mixed with coconut coir (and sometimes gypsum or manure), where it helps the substrate hold water evenly without becoming waterlogged — supporting the "field capacity" balance that healthy mycelial growth depends on. In PF Tek specifically, vermiculite is layered with brown rice flour and water inside small jars, where it provides structure and moisture buffering for the resulting mycelium-colonized "cake." Vermiculite is also a common ingredient in casing layers — the thin, non-nutritive layer placed on top of colonized bulk substrate — where a 50% vermiculite mix (sometimes combined with peat moss, hydrated lime, or gypsum) helps maintain the humid microclimate that triggers and sustains pinning.
Vermiculite itself contains essentially no nutrients, which is precisely why it's useful: it lets cultivators control moisture and aeration independently from nutrient content, rather than the nutrient-dense substrate itself (grain, coir, or manure) doing double duty. Because it holds water so readily, over-saturating a vermiculite-containing mix is a common beginner mistake that can lead to waterlogged, poorly aerated substrate and increased risk of bacterial contamination.
Food-grade, chemical-free vermiculite (sold for horticultural use) is the standard choice for cultivation; some older vermiculite products have historically raised asbestos-contamination concerns depending on their mine of origin, so cultivators are generally advised to buy from reputable horticultural suppliers rather than unknown or industrial sources.
