Definition

Mushroom tea is a method of preparing psilocybin mushrooms by steeping dried, ground or finely chopped material in hot (not boiling) water, typically around 70-80°C, for 15-20 minutes before straining. It is one of several common consumption methods alongside eating mushrooms whole and lemon tek, and is often chosen specifically to reduce the nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort that can accompany eating fibrous mushroom material directly.

How Mushroom Tea Compares to Other Methods

Steeping mushrooms rather than eating them whole extracts the psychoactive compounds into the liquid while leaving behind much of the chitin — the fibrous cell-wall material that some people find harder to digest — which is the main reason tea is associated with reduced nausea for many users. Straining out the solid mushroom material before drinking is standard practice, though some people choose to eat the strained solids as well for a fuller dose. Adding lemon juice, ginger, or other flavoring is common both to mask the earthy, unpleasant taste of mushroom tea and, in the case of lemon or lime juice specifically, to potentially begin the same acid-based pre-conversion process used in lemon tek.

Onset for tea is generally considered somewhat faster than eating whole dried mushrooms, since the compounds are already in a more readily absorbable liquid form rather than requiring digestion of solid plant matter first, though the difference is less dramatic than with lemon tek specifically. Total intensity and duration are still governed primarily by dose and individual sensitivity rather than the preparation method itself — tea does not reliably increase potency the way lemon tek is believed to.

As with any preparation method, harm-reduction guidance still applies fully: dose should be weighed and measured before preparation, mixing with alcohol or other substances carries its own risks regardless of preparation method, and a sober trip sitter is recommended particularly for higher doses or first-time use.
