Definition
A dose is the amount of a substance consumed at one time. With psilocybin mushrooms, dose is typically measured in grams of dried material rather than fresh weight, since drying removes most water content and makes measurement more consistent. Because potency varies by species and even between individual mushrooms of the same batch, the same gram weight can produce meaningfully different effects from one source to another.
How Dose Ranges Are Defined
Dose is generally split into bands, each associated with a characteristic intensity of effect: a microdose (roughly 0.1-0.5g dried) is sub-perceptual and produces no noticeable psychedelic effects; a low dose (roughly 0.5-1.5g) produces mild perceptual changes; a moderate dose (roughly 1.5-3.5g) produces a clear psychedelic experience; a high dose (roughly 3.5-5g) produces strong visual and emotional effects; and a heroic dose (5g or more) produces intense, ego-dissolving experiences that carry significant psychological risk and are not recommended for inexperienced users. These ranges are approximate guides rather than fixed thresholds, since body weight, individual sensitivity, tolerance, and the specific mushroom's potency all shift where an individual lands within a given band.
Because response is unpredictable and potency is inconsistent from one batch to the next, harm-reduction guidance consistently recommends starting with a low dose — particularly for anyone trying a new source or species for the first time — and waiting a full session before considering a higher amount. Redosing mid-experience is generally discouraged, since rapidly developing tolerance means a second dose taken too soon often produces a weaker-than-expected boost while extending the length and unpredictability of the session.
Getting dose right is one of the most consequential harm-reduction decisions in the entire experience: too low may feel anticlimactic, but too high — especially without a trip sitter or in an unfamiliar setting — meaningfully raises the odds of an overwhelming or frightening experience. Weighing dried material on a milligram-accurate scale, rather than estimating by eye or "a cap and stem," is the most reliable way to keep a dose within an intended range.
