Introduction
Psilocybe tampanensis and Psilocybe azurescens sit at opposite ends of the potency spectrum. Tampanensis is a moderate-potency species best known for reliably forming sclerotia ("philosopher's stones") that are easy to grow and store long-term. Azurescens is widely considered the single most potent psilocybin mushroom species known, native to a narrow strip of the Pacific Northwest coast, and demands a completely different level of dosing caution.
Tampanensis vs Azurescens: Comparison Table
| Characteristic | Psilocybe Tampanensis | Psilocybe Azurescens |
|---|---|---|
| Potency | Moderate, ~0.5-1.0% psilocybin by dry weight (sclerotia: 0.30-0.68%) | Very high, ~1.0-1.8% psilocybin by dry weight — among the most potent species known |
| Growing difficulty | Moderate for mushrooms; easy (set-and-forget) for sclerotia over 3-6 months | Very challenging — requires cool temperatures and wood-based substrates, usually grown outdoors |
| Appearance | Small brown conical cap (1-3 cm), thin pale stem, plus hard sclerotia lumps | Caramel-to-chestnut wavy cap with papilla (3-10 cm), long white stem, extremely fast/intense bluing |
| Habitat | Rare in the wild; originally described from Tampa, Florida; mostly known via cultivation | Wood-loving; coastal dune grass and wood debris, narrow Pacific Northwest (Oregon/Washington) range |
| Storage | Sclerotia store exceptionally well — dried sclerotia can last 1-2+ years | Standard dried mushroom storage; months to a few years with proper technique |
| Best suited for | Cultivators wanting a low-maintenance, long-storing harvest; those newer to psilocybin mushrooms generally | Highly experienced users only, given extreme potency; NOT for beginners |
Which Is Right for You?
New to psilocybin mushrooms or want a forgiving, storable cultivation project? Tampanensis sclerotia are about as low-maintenance as psilocybin mushroom cultivation gets, and their moderate potency makes dosing far more predictable. Already experienced and seeking the most potent species available? Azurescens is in an entirely different category of strength — even seasoned cubensis users should dose azurescens as if starting over, at a small fraction of their usual amount (see the full species guide for dose ranges). These two species are rarely considered interchangeable for the same use case.
Safety Reminder
Potency figures above are general reference ranges — individual specimens vary. Always research the legal status of psilocybin mushrooms in your jurisdiction, start with conservative doses, ensure proper identification before consuming any wild mushroom, and see our Safety Guide for comprehensive harm-reduction information.
