One Species, Two Forms

Psilocybe tampanensis is unique among psychedelic mushrooms because it produces two distinct forms of psilocybin-containing structures: traditional fruiting bodies (mushrooms) and sclerotia (commonly called "magic truffles" or "philosopher's stones").

What Are Sclerotia?

Sclerotia are hardened masses of mycelium that form underground as a survival mechanism. Think of them as the mushroom's "emergency food storage"—densely packed nutrient reserves that allow the organism to survive harsh conditions (drought, cold, lack of oxygen).

When conditions improve, the sclerotia can either:

  • Sprout fruiting bodies (mushrooms)
  • Continue growing larger
  • Remain dormant for months or years

Side-by-Side Comparison

Feature Sclerotia (Stones) Fruiting Bodies (Mushrooms)
Appearance Small, hard, irregular lumps. Tan to dark brown. Size: walnut to marble. Traditional mushroom shape. Caramel cap, white stem. 3-8 cm tall.
Texture Dense, hard, nut-like. Must be chewed thoroughly or ground. Soft, fibrous when fresh. Brittle when dried.
Potency (by dry weight) 0.30-0.68% psilocybin. Generally less potent than fruits. 0.60-1.0% psilocybin. More potent per gram.
Growth Time 3-5 months from inoculation. 4-6 weeks from inoculation (if fruiting conditions are met).
Cultivation Difficulty Easy (set and forget). No fruiting chamber needed. Moderate (requires precise fruiting conditions).
Legal Status (Europe) Legal in Netherlands. Gray area in some countries. Illegal in most countries.
Taste Earthy, nutty, slightly bitter. Harder to chew. Earthy, mushroomy, mild. Easier to consume.
Storage Excellent. Can store dried for 1+ years with minimal degradation. Good. 6-12 months dried with proper storage.

Potency Deep Dive

Why Are Sclerotia Less Potent?

Sclerotia contain psilocybin, but in lower concentrations than fruiting bodies. The exact reason isn't fully understood, but theories include:

  • Purpose: Sclerotia are survival structures, not reproductive structures. They prioritize nutrients over alkaloid production.
  • Water Content: Fresh sclerotia have higher water content, diluting the alkaloids.
  • Age: Younger sclerotia tend to be less potent than older, more mature ones.

Dosage Equivalents

As a rough guide:

  • 1g dried sclerotia0.5-0.7g dried mushrooms
  • For a "standard" 2.5g mushroom experience, you'd need approximately 4-5g dried sclerotia.

⚠️ Dosage Note

Always start low with a new batch. Potency varies significantly between batches, cultivation methods, and age of sclerotia.

Cultivation Comparison

Growing Sclerotia

  1. Substrate: Rye grain or popcorn in jars.
  2. Inoculation: Standard sterile technique.
  3. Colonization: 4-6 weeks at room temp (70-75°F / 21-24°C).
  4. Sclerotia Formation: Leave jars sealed for 3-5 months. Sclerotia form naturally in the substrate.
  5. Harvest: Break open jars, sift through grain, collect sclerotia.

Growing Fruiting Bodies

  1. Substrate: Same as above.
  2. Inoculation & Colonization: Same (4-6 weeks).
  3. Fruiting Trigger: Move to fruiting chamber with high humidity (90%+), fresh air, and light.
  4. Fruiting: 1-3 weeks for pins to mature.
  5. Harvest: Pick mushrooms when veil breaks.

Which is Easier?

Sclerotia are much easier. You don't need a fruiting chamber, humidity control, or fresh air exchange. Just inoculate jars and wait. This makes sclerotia ideal for beginners or stealth cultivators.

Effects Comparison

Do They Feel Different?

Anecdotally, some users report subtle differences:

  • Sclerotia: Described as "smoother," "more grounded," with less intense visuals and more body sensation.
  • Fruiting Bodies: More visual, "headier," with sharper peak.

However: These differences are subtle and may be influenced by placebo, dosage variations, or set and setting. Chemically, both contain psilocybin/psilocin, so the core experience is the same.

Legal Considerations

The Netherlands Loophole

In the Netherlands, fruiting bodies are illegal, but sclerotia are legal to sell and possess. This legal quirk exists because sclerotia are not explicitly listed as controlled substances.

This is why "magic truffles" are sold in Amsterdam smartshops, while "magic mushrooms" are not.

Elsewhere

In most countries (USA, UK, Canada, Australia), both sclerotia and fruiting bodies containing psilocybin are illegal. The legal status depends on the presence of psilocybin, not the form.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Sclerotia If... Choose Fruiting Bodies If...
You want easier cultivation You want higher potency per gram
You don't have space for a fruiting chamber You want faster results
You're in the Netherlands You prefer the "classic" mushroom experience
You want long-term storage You're experienced with cultivation

Can You Get Both?

Yes! Some cultivators harvest sclerotia after 3 months, then break up the remaining colonized grain and case it to induce fruiting. This way, you get the best of both worlds.
