Introduction

Psilocybe semilanceata ("Liberty Cap") and Psilocybe tampanensis ("Philosopher's Stone") both offer moderate-to-high potency, but they occupy nearly opposite ends of the foraging-versus-cultivation spectrum. Semilanceata is one of the most widespread and commonly foraged psilocybin mushrooms in the world, found throughout temperate grasslands in Europe and North America, but it is notoriously difficult to cultivate and is almost always gathered from the wild. Tampanensis, discovered near Tampa, Florida in 1977, is rare in nature but well suited to cultivation, particularly for its underground sclerotia, which are prized for their ease of storage.

Semilanceata vs Tampanensis: Comparison Table

Characteristic Psilocybe Semilanceata Psilocybe Tampanensis
Potency Moderate to high, ~0.2-1.4% psilocybin by dry weight (most specimens 0.5-1.0%) — more potent gram-for-gram than cubensis Moderate, ~0.5-1.0% psilocybin (mushrooms); sclerotia typically lower at ~0.30-0.68%
Growing difficulty Very challenging — difficult to cultivate reliably; almost always foraged rather than grown Moderate for mushrooms, easy for sclerotia (set-and-forget in sealed jars over months)
Appearance Small conical to bell-shaped cap (0.5-2.5 cm) with a distinctive pointed nipple/umbo; slender wavy stem, no annulus Small brown conical-to-umbonate cap (1-3 cm), thin pale stem, plus hard tan/brown sclerotia lumps underground
Habitat / origin Grazed grasslands, pastures, and lawns across Europe (UK, Scandinavia) and parts of North America; late summer through fall Originally described from Tampa, Florida; rare in the wild, mostly known via cultivation
Best suited for Experienced foragers in regions where it grows wild, comfortable with careful identification Cultivators wanting an easy, storable sclerotia harvest rather than foraging

Which Is Right for You?

Have access to grazed grassland habitat and forage responsibly? Semilanceata is one of the most iconic and widespread wild psilocybin mushrooms, but proper identification is essential, and because it's rarely successfully cultivated, sourcing it means foraging in season. Prefer a controlled, cultivable option with excellent storage properties? Tampanensis sclerotia are one of the simplest psilocybin-containing structures to grow at home, requiring no fruiting chamber — just sealed jars and patience. Both species deliver moderate-to-high potency, so dosing conservatively applies to either.

Safety Reminder

Potency figures above are general reference ranges — individual specimens vary. Always research the legal status of psilocybin mushrooms in your jurisdiction, start with conservative doses, ensure proper identification before consuming any wild mushroom, and see our Safety Guide for comprehensive harm-reduction information.
