The Trigger: The Autumn Drop

Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Cap) is a cool-weather mushroom. Unlike Cubensis which loves heat, Liberty Caps need the temperature to drop. The season typically begins when:

  • Daytime temperatures drop below 15°C (60°F).
  • Nighttime temperatures drop below 10°C (50°F).
  • Heavy rains have soaked the ground thoroughly.

The season ends with the first hard frost, which kills the mycelium's fruiting ability for the year.

Micro-Climate Factors

Even within a region, local conditions shift the season:

  • Elevation: For every 100m of elevation gain, the season starts about 1 week earlier. Look high up in the hills first!
  • Aspect: North-facing slopes (in Northern Hemisphere) stay cooler and wetter, often fruiting earlier and lasting longer.
  • Soil Moisture: Well-drained but moist grasslands are key. Avoid waterlogged swamps.

⚠️ The "False Start"

Sometimes a cold, wet week in August will trigger a small flush, followed by a heatwave that dries everything up. Don't be discouraged. The "real" season is consistent cool weather.
