The Wood-Lover's Cycle
Psilocybe cyanescens (Wavy Cap) is a wood-loving species native to the Pacific Northwest and Central Europe. Unlike the tropical Psilocybe cubensis, Wavy Caps have a lifecycle strictly governed by the changing seasons. They grow vegetatively during the warm months and fruit only when the temperature drops significantly in late autumn.
Phase 1: Colonization (Vegetative Growth)
During this phase, the mycelium is eating the wood chips and expanding its network. It is relatively tolerant of warmth.
🌡️ Colonization Temps
- Optimal Range: 65°F - 75°F (18°C - 24°C)
- Maximum: 80°F (27°C). Above this, growth stalls and bacteria take over.
- Minimum: 40°F (4°C). Growth slows to a crawl but doesn't die.
Strategy: In an outdoor bed, this phase happens from Spring through late Summer. Keep the bed moist and shaded to prevent overheating.
Phase 2: The Cold Shock (Primordia Formation)
This is the most critical step. Wavy Caps will not fruit without a significant drop in temperature. This signals to the mycelium that winter is coming and it's time to drop spores.
❄️ Trigger Temps
- Nighttime Drop: Temperatures must drop to 40°F - 50°F (4°C - 10°C) consistently for several nights.
- Daytime Highs: Should not exceed 60°F (15°C).
- Moisture: This drop must be accompanied by heavy rain or heavy watering.
Phase 3: Fruiting
Once pins (baby mushrooms) have formed, they develop slowly in the cool air.
🍄 Fruiting Temps
- Optimal Range: 45°F - 55°F (7°C - 13°C).
- Freeze Risk: Mature fruits can survive a light frost (30°F / -1°C) but will turn to mush if frozen solid.
- Heat Risk: If a "false spring" brings temps above 65°F (18°C), growing fruits may abort or rot.
Indoor Cultivation Challenges
Replicating these conditions indoors is extremely difficult, which is why P. cyanescens is considered an "expert only" indoor grow.
- The Fridge Method: Some growers colonize grain/sawdust at room temp, then place the entire tray in a dedicated wine cooler or modified fridge set to 50°F (10°C) to induce fruiting.
- Garage/Basement: Placing trays in an unheated garage during late autumn is often easier than using a fridge.
Summary Table
| Stage | Temperature | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spawn Run | 70°F (21°C) | 4-8 Weeks | Fastest growth. Keep dark. |
| Outdoor Bed Run | Variable (Spring/Summer) | 4-6 Months | Nature handles this. Keep watered. |
| Fruiting Trigger | < 50°F (10°C) | 1-2 Weeks | Requires high humidity/rain. |
| Harvest | 45-55°F (7-13°C) | 2-4 Weeks | Slow growth means potent fruits. |
