Meet Psilocybe Baeocystis

Psilocybe baeocystis, commonly known as the "bottle cap" or "knobby top," is a moderately potent psilocybin mushroom found in the Pacific Northwest. It's often confused with other small brown mushrooms (LBMs - "Little Brown Mushrooms"), making proper identification critical.

Key Identification Features

Cap

  • Size: 1.5-5.5 cm diameter
  • Shape: Conical to convex, often with a distinct umbo (nipple). Margin often wrinkled or wavy.
  • Color: Olive-brown to dark brown when wet, fading to yellowish-tan when dry (hygrophanous).
  • Texture: Smooth, slightly sticky when moist.

Stem (Stipe)

  • Size: 4-9 cm tall, 2-6 mm thick
  • Color: Whitish to pale brown, often with bluish staining near the base
  • Texture: Fibrous, often curved or wavy
  • Ring: None (important for distinguishing from deadly Galerina)

Gills

  • Attachment: Adnate to adnexed (attached to stem)
  • Color: Pale gray when young, purple-brown to dark purple-black at maturity
  • Spacing: Close to crowded

Spore Print

  • Color: Dark purple-brown to blackish

Bruising

  • Reaction: Bruises blue-green, especially on the stem base and cap margin

Habitat & Season

  • Substrate: Wood debris, wood chips, peat moss, conifer mulch. Sometimes on lawns near wood.
  • Location: Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, British Columbia), Northern California
  • Season: Late summer to late autumn (September - December)
  • Climate: Cool, moist conditions

Lookalike Species Comparison

Species Key Differences Danger Level
Psilocybe stuntzii Smaller cap (1-3 cm), grows in clusters, more common in grass. Also active (safe confusion). None (Active)
Psilocybe cyanescens Larger, more pronounced wavy cap edges, stronger blue bruising. Also active (safe confusion). None (Active)
Galerina marginata DEADLY! Has a ring on the stem, rusty-brown spores (not purple), grows on wood. NEVER consume without spore print. DEADLY
Pholiota species Has scales on cap, rusty-brown spores, no blue bruising. Low (Not toxic, not active)
Hypholoma fasciculare Grows in dense clusters on wood, yellow cap, bitter taste, no blue bruising. Medium (Toxic, causes GI distress)

Critical Safety Checks

⚠️ ALWAYS Check These

  1. Spore Print: MUST be dark purple-brown to black. Rusty brown = DANGER.
  2. No Ring: If there's a ring on the stem, it's NOT Baeocystis.
  3. Blue Bruising: While not all active mushrooms bruise strongly, Baeocystis should show at least some blue on the stem base.
  4. Habitat: Wood debris/chips, not directly on logs.

Potency & Effects

P. baeocystis contains psilocybin, psilocin, and notably high levels of baeocystin (named after this species). Total alkaloid content is moderate to high (0.15-0.85% psilocybin by dry weight).

Effects: Similar to other Psilocybe species—visual alterations, introspective thoughts, mood elevation. Some users report a slightly more "body load" compared to Cubensis.
