Overview

This page collects the most common questions about what psilocybin does, how much to take, and what to expect during an experience. For more detailed coverage, see our Dosage & Effects section.

How long do psilocybin effects last?

A typical psilocybin experience lasts 4–6 hours from onset to return to baseline. Onset begins 30–60 minutes after consumption. Peak effects occur between 1.5 and 3 hours. After the peak, effects taper gradually over 2–3 hours. Some people notice a gentle afterglow — heightened mood, increased reflectiveness — for several additional hours or into the next day.

Dose affects duration: smaller doses tend to produce shorter experiences. Lemon tek preparation (soaking mushrooms in lemon juice before consuming) generally produces faster onset and a slightly shorter but more intense experience.

What is the right dose for a beginner?

Most harm-reduction organisations recommend starting with 1–1.5 g of dried Psilocybe cubensis. This produces mild, manageable effects while allowing you to understand your personal sensitivity. Do not start with more than 2 g on your first experience. Use a precise digital scale — never estimate by sight.

See our detailed First-Time Dosing Guide for full preparation advice.

Can you overdose on psilocybin mushrooms?

Psilocybin has an exceptionally high physiological safety margin. No lethal dose has been established in humans. The primary risk of taking too much is psychological overwhelm — intense panic, confusion, or paranoia — rather than physical harm. At very high doses, impaired judgment may lead to accidental physical injury, which is why a safe environment and sober companion are important.

Consuming the wrong mushrooms entirely — misidentified toxic species — is a genuine risk for foragers. Only consume mushrooms from a known, verified source.

Why didn't I feel anything?

Several factors commonly reduce or eliminate psilocybin's effects:

  • Full stomach: A large meal can dramatically slow absorption. Taking mushrooms on an empty or nearly empty stomach (3–4 hours fasted) produces more reliable onset.
  • SSRIs and other medications: Antidepressants, particularly SSRIs, can significantly blunt or completely block psilocybin's psychedelic effects.
  • Low dose: At 0.5–1 g, some people with lower sensitivity feel very little.
  • Anxiety-induced resistance: Paradoxically, strong anxiety can sometimes suppress the experience.
  • Low-potency material: Not all dried mushrooms contain the same psilocybin content.

What does psilocybin actually feel like?

The subjective experience varies enormously by dose:

  • Microdose (0.05–0.3 g): Subtle background mood improvement, increased focus. No obvious "trip."
  • Low dose (1–1.5 g): Gentle mood lift, colours appear more vivid, introspective thoughts, mild physical warmth. Social and functional.
  • Moderate dose (2–3.5 g): Clear visual distortions, deep emotional states, altered time perception, laughter or tears, a sense of significance.
  • High dose (3.5 g+): Intense visual phenomena, possible ego dissolution (loss of normal sense of self), mystical states, or challenging psychological material.

Does psilocybin cause nausea?

Mild to moderate nausea is common, particularly during the first 30–90 minutes. It usually resolves on its own as the experience deepens. Strategies that help: consuming on a near-empty stomach, making mushroom tea (which removes some of the fibrous material), using ginger or ginger tea alongside, and lying down during onset.

How does psilocybin interact with cannabis?

Combining psilocybin with cannabis is common but significantly increases unpredictability and intensity. Cannabis can dramatically amplify psilocybin's effects, sometimes causing anxiety or panic that would not have occurred otherwise. This combination is particularly risky for inexperienced users. If combining, use very small amounts of cannabis, wait until you are stable in the experience, and be aware that cannabis tolerance does not protect against amplification of psychedelic intensity.

Does psilocybin build tolerance?

Yes — psilocybin builds rapid pharmacological tolerance. Two doses taken two days apart will result in the second being significantly weaker. Full tolerance typically develops within 2–3 days of use and clears within 1–2 weeks. There is cross-tolerance with LSD and other serotonergic psychedelics. This rapid tolerance pattern makes compulsive daily use self-defeating, and psilocybin is not considered physically addictive.

Can I have a bad trip at a low dose?

Challenging experiences are possible at any dose, though they are rare at genuinely low doses (under 1.5 g). Anxiety, nausea, or brief unsettling thoughts can occur even at threshold doses. The key factors that increase risk are: a difficult personal situation before the experience, an uncomfortable or unfamiliar environment, being alone, and pre-existing anxiety disorders. Good preparation — set, setting, and a trusted companion — substantially reduces the risk at any dose.

What is the afterglow effect?

Many people report a period of elevated mood, openness, and reflectiveness in the days following a psilocybin experience — commonly called the afterglow. This can last from a day to several weeks. Clinical research at Johns Hopkins found lasting positive changes in wellbeing, openness, and life satisfaction weeks and months after a single well-prepared session. The afterglow period is considered ideal for journaling and integration work.
